USNews Poll: Americans want more women in leadership

A survey by Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and the U.S. News & World Report showed:

The poll also showed that 64 percent believe the country would be better off if more women occupied leadership positions, and perhaps surprisingly more men than women believe this -- 69 percent to 61 percent.

So just to be clear:

  • 73% of Americans polled lack confidence in their leaders
  • 66% believe the US faces a leadership crisis
  • 61% of women polled believe the country would be better off with more women leaders
  • 69% of men believe we need more women leaders

Women in Science

The topic of Science Friday at Talk of the Nation is Women in Science. You can listen live here to the archive here.

A while back, the National Science Foundation decided to make a concerted effort to put more deversity into science by recruiting more women. It paid off: half of all science Phds earned today are earned by women. But women in science still face some barriers.

While 50% of science Phds are awarded to women, females make up fewer than 15% of college science professors today. The show interviews female science university professors to explore the reasons behind the phenomenon.

UPDATE 8/27/2005: Archive of this episode is here. All Science Friday podcasts available here (thanks to Steve Rhodes for the link.)

Feminism's last frontiers

I haven't had any time to post lately, but I couldn't let this column by John Tierney, What Women Want, pass by. I think we are on the final two frontiers of feminism: 1) childbearing and 2) recognizing women's limited appetite for fighting, just for the fun of it. Tierney explains the appetite part, and joins my growing sample set of men, left and right, hinting they're ready for a female prez. (Ironically, it is no coincidence these sentiments are sprouting in the first year of Bush's second term. I think it's a latent desire for President Mommy.) In Tierney's case, he's talking about a CEO instead of a US president, but the slant is the same: "The result is not good for the bottom line, as demonstrated by a study from the Catalyst research organization showing that large companies yield better returns to stockholders if they have more women in senior management."

The childbearing part has to do with the urgent career interruption that is a woman's limited window for bearing children. Women with plans for no children are affected indirectly, by the mere perception that she may quit mid-track to start a family. But we're approaching the edge of this limitation too, as I learned at one of Sylvia Paull's Gracenet gatherings a few months ago. With advances in fertility and engaged fathers, we clear that hurdle.

What do we do then? Actually, there's a third frontier. We all know they're not going to do it on their own. It'll be up to the feminists to launch...manism. Masculinism? SNAGism. Item one on the agenda for that project is to find a name. Because this will be neither macho nor metrosexual. This field of study will allow guys to reclaim their maleness in a way that both sexes embrace. How do I know all this? Egotistical intuition. If you know anybody with a large corpus callosum, they'll tell you I'm right. Bwoaahahahaaaa!!!

White girl talks culture

UPDATE (5/8/2005): This was posted late, and I meandered way off the reservation point of this whole post. A friend said she's under a lot of pressure because Hispanic women her age have babies, but she wants to move to New York to pursue a photojournalism career. This (unmarried, childless) friend is 30. The reaction on her face told me my reassurance - that the same pressures exist in whitey land - rang hollow. If anyone can toss us a clue, please leave a comment.

One of the drawbacks of being a white girl (and by white I mean was in a sorority, live in the Marina district, grew up in a suburb with cul de sacs aplenty) is that I can't blame culture for my circumstances.
