The SF Chronicle ran a fascinating story about the killing of a community leader, or tong "dragon head", in Chinatown. Reads almost like a graphic noir novel. Two days before Allen Leung was killed by gunfire at his Jackson street import-export business, "someone splattered the headquarters of several Chinatown tongs with red
paint," some sort of symbolic fish-wrapped-in-newsprint type of gesture, I guess?
"According to federal authorities, Chinese organized crime had taken over Hop Sing and other tongs. Two of the reputed leaders were Peter Chong and Raymond 'Shrimp Boy' Chow," the Chronicle reported.
<--Raymond 'Shrimp Boy' Chow, who moved to the US from China in 1976 and was later sent to prison to serve ten years of a 25-year sentence, appeared at Leung's funeral in a white suit. "Leung's mourners hold newspapers to block photographers," the Chronicle caption said.
