Podcasts might not Suck
TheKitchen led me to this Noded post today which captures why I thought podcasts would suck. Am starting to think they might not suck:
- Listening to blogs in audio doesn't sound appealing, but using the technology to audio-tivo satellite and public radio programs could be good.
- For an audio show producer, it's probably expensive & cumbersome to cast your own satellite radio show. Maybe you have to hitch a ride on someone's frequency or use their dish. I imagine recording & posting a segment on the net much easier for someone of talent with no...dish?
- #2 provides more choices to audioTivo. Rely on the (text)blogosphere to sift out some gems taylored to your tastes.
Noded guy makes a good point: outline metadata would help this take off (unless the audio producer is so good you always want to hear their latest cast). I have yet to really play with this stuff but I imagine skipping to the next rss enclosure like songs on a cd. I also thought metadata would appear on the little iPod screen to preview the feed or "album" and the listener could pick, choose. And no, linklove will not work via audio the way it does in text, at least for now.
Some podcasts are providing this kind of info and links in blog entries.
This engadget podcast has the time each segment starts so you can fast forward to the parts you want to listen to.
